Village Continues Push for Safer Route 59 & W. Bartlett Road Intersection
Updated April 17, 2017 -- The Village staff met with IDOT on April 14 regarding the intersection of Rt. 59 and W. Bartlett Road. The intersection was the site of a deadly motor vehicle accident on Friday, April 7.
A Chevy S-10 pickup truck collided head on with a large white box truck. Four people were transported to area hospitals following the incident, and the 17-year-old back seat passenger in the pickup truck died later due to injuries sustained in the crash. According to the police department, 46 crashes were recorded at this intersection in 2016.
At the April 14 meeting, the Village and IDOT agreed to continue to work toward a full dual left lanes at all legs of the intersection. However in the short-term IDOT has committed to:
* Review and adjust the timing to clear more cars making turns onto RT. 59
* Add a flashing signal sign on the northbound lane of Rt. 59 to alert drivers to the signal ahead
* Install a “left turn yield on green” so you won’t have drivers creeping into the intersection
* Trim the vegetation along the sound wall to improve visibility coming into the intersection
